Job description

Head Gardener & Housekeeper

West Berkshire ASAP/flexible

£900-£1000 pw net

A picturesque private estate situated in West Berkshire requires an enthusiastic and experienced couple to work alongside the existing Estate Manager and House Manager. One of the couple should be confident in taking on the responsibility of team leader with overall charge of day to day organisation of the garden. It is expected they will have excellent plant knowledge, all round horticultural skills, and the ability to work with/lead a small team of gardeners. It would be preferable, but not essential, for applicants to have a recognised horticultural qualification and experience working in a large private garden of a similar nature. Applicants should hold PA1/PA6 spray tickets; however these may be gained at a later date. A chainsaw licence would be beneficial, and experience with a wide range of gardening machinery essential. Blaklader gardening clothing is also provided for staff as part of their staff uniform. The 10 acre gardens comprise sizeable flower beds, small vegetable garden, greenhouse, large areas of lawns, woodland and river frontage. The traditional English country garden is undergoing the redesign of some elements, therefore candidates should be willing to work enthusiastically alongside the owner and designer to implement and care for the new planting. The partner should be an experienced and discreet housekeeper with an eye for detail and high standards to maintain the 8 bed property to a 5* level. You will be part of a great team, so must be a good team player and proactive in organisational skills and time management. Duties will include cleaning, making beds, laundry, ironing and care of fine fabrics, etc. The ability to cook light healthy meals when the chef is off duty is preferred, plus table service when required. Experience in flower arranging would be a bonus, and to also be willing to assist in the garden/greenhouse during quiet times. Staff uniform is provided. Couple will be expected to work at the weekends and take 2 days off during the normal working week. However there is flexibility for a large number of weekends free especially during the quieter times in the garden. Candidates should be trustworthy and understand estate security. They should also be prepared to assist the Estate Manager with other estate tasks when required. The estate has a welcoming environment therefore applicants must have a friendly and flexible approach to work with a willingness to work hard and be an integral part of a small friendly team. The residence is a part time home for a family based overseas and can be very busy for a few months in the summer, therefore you will be expected to work longer hours during this period with time off in lieu when the family are not in residence. Full security screening and references will be required before the vacancy is offered to the successful candidates. Non-smokers with full UK driving licence’s. ACCOMMODATION: A well maintained, recently refurbished 2 bed, 2 bathroom apartment with private garden provided as staff accommodation with all utilities paid. Unfortunately, unsuitable for pets or dependants. SALARY: £900-£1000 per week net dependant on experience and suitability. Job reference 33557
