Job description

Gardener

Vale of Glamorgan – Private Estate

£23,000 to £27,000 pa depending on experience

40 hours/5 days a week (32 hours/4 days a week will be considered)

We are looking for an organised gardener with a real passion for plants and gardening to maintain and develop a 3 ½ acre garden (lawns with herbaceous borders, topiary and vegetable gardens, stumpery and wildlife area)with stream, pond, woodland area and grounds, to help ensure they look at their best all year round.

You will have at least three years’ experience of working in a private/public garden or similar setting, undertaking a wide range of horticultural duties. You may have worked as part of a larger team and are now ready to take on the responsibility of managing a garden.

Reporting to the owner with the support of the PA, you will be jointly responsible for the direction of the garden with the owner; you will manage and have the support of two part-time gardener for the running of the garden. You will commission and manage outside contractors for larger jobs.  You will also be expected to undertake ad hoc occasional tasks to help out the Household team where necessary.

You will hold a formal qualification in horticulture (at least NVQ 2 or equivalent) coupled with a good knowledge of plants. 

You will be familiar with sit-on lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and ideally chainsaws, and able to effect minor repairs to garden equipment.

You will have a full, clean driving licence and your own transport as this job involves some work-related driving.

You will be well motivated, working well as part of a team but also able to use your own initiative to work unaided. You must have good organisational skills, be able to plan the garden activities and the work plans of the staff.
